Madeleine McCann ate my website
September 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Since Madeleine disappeared the media has kicked up such a hyper that this poor little girl has been on every newspaper and TV around the world.
If you have any information on Madeleine please inform your local authorities or police. She’s still missing
What’s happened is that everyone is talking about Maddy and her tragic circumstances. Such is the interest that an image that I posted was getting hyperlinked from everywhere around the world.
This is the image, people are using it on the myspace sites, forums, and blogs. Most are not looking at the page, just dragging in the image that I’m hosting here at screamingstones. co.uk. It’s played a bit of havoc with hosting because the bandwidth is fairly big, something like 20gigs a month - so much that this website was blipping on and off line because of high bandwidth. I’ve sorted it out with my hosting company - so link away - anything to get this girl back.
It’s great if I can help out the effort in a very small way, and is something I like a lot.

I’m relaunching this image by my blog to keep fresh interest in Madeleine in the hope that she WILL be found.
Link this to your MySpace, Facebook, forum, blog, anything you want. Please do ..

What’s it like running a FREE web directory?
September 23, 2007 | Leave a Comment
It’s a new internet phenomenon - Web Directories.
Web Directories
What are web directories?
Imagine a yellow pages but every site that’s listed has got a hyper link.
They are at their peak, and there must be more than 10,000 of them at the moment. The current blooming of directories was instigated by the availability of cheap but well-built scripts to run them. They are an interesting tool as many SEO people will mention : BACKLINKS ARE GREAT for SEO. By giving you a backlink from the directory they should help your site a little to budge it up the rankings.
Many people start them because they can have a payment structure built-in which gives the site a few dollars for reviewing your site and making sure it’s in the correct category and contributes towards the hosting costs.
On the other hand there are many directories that run for free - yup NO PAYMENT. GREAT! Where are the free ones? Vilesilencer has the best list and you can find it here Free Web Directories
WOW - this is good - how can I setup one?
Well, first I recommend reading this article by someone who already has gone through everything with his directory. A fine read and is worth casting your glance over to see what’s involved … running a web directory. Here’s snippet :
Stage 1 - You dream of ownership and possible fame from owning the next BIG directory. The desire to help your fellow forum members and maybe earn some cash along the way is the driving force behind your decision to build a directory.
Stage 9 - Deciding that a paid directory would solve most of your problems, with a little embarassement you announce your directory is going paid but you will keep the prices low $1 a submission to keep out the shady submitters, auto submitters and spam. Maybe this higher class of submitters will even be literate enough to read the terms and conditions thereby making approvals a lot quicker. Now you can start to make some money too.

StumbleUpon traffic is pants and here’s why
September 21, 2007 | Leave a Comment
There’s an interesting thread over at PRO SEO Forums about the effects of StumbleUpon and what the author calls a Stumble SWARM. The swarm congregates on a site suddenly, pounds the site for a day, and then clears off. Within 24 hours the site was swamped with traffic and then it breaks off and nothing is seen again for days after.
Here at Words and Pictures blog we are sure that Stumblers bring some great traffic and visibility to websites but the author doesn’t rate it at all - the author writes:
Checking the referrer showed it was ALL from stumbleupon.com so the URL had been shared on Stumbleupon and within about 8 hours the site had got 844 unique vists.
[snip]
Personally I think it’s pants, at least on this occasion.
You can read more of this interesting article at :
StumbleUpon gives loads of naff traffic
Might be worth you guys dropping a post or two on there about your view on Stumbleupon traffic.

How to setup a popular internet forum - a How To Guide
September 7, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Looking to start your own forum? - Look no further. There is a great article over at Digital Point Forums giving a great introduction to running a successful forum.
Here is just a snippett:
So you have an idea. Now what? Well first you need to decide whether or not your idea is unique enough to draw in members, if not then you need to brainstorm ways to make it more unique. Look at other forums within the same area as your potential forum, use these as a guide to what has already been done and what ever you do please DO NOT steal any ideas, it’s just not fair! Once you’re sure your idea will stand up as a forum you can move on to choosing a forum software.
Very little technical knowledge is needed to learn how to use Invisionfree and Proboards (the most popular remotely hosted forum softwares, you don’t have to worry about handling important forum files as they are hosted and looked after by the service provider. These can be an excellent base to learn how to run a forum in general and quite a few people have actually built very large and successful communities on these. If you’re unsure as to what you’re actually doing and whether running a forum is what you’d like to be doing then this is a great place to start; totally free, quite simple to setup and run. ……
For more information see the original, and well-written article, about setting up a forum.

Save money on Eurotunnel car trips
September 3, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Going to France can be costly by Eurotunnel, especially if you’re going on a long trip and book a return journey. France is such a great place to pick up some great wine and cheap beer that it should be cheaper than £150 return. That’s right .. book a return journey, say 6 days, and it could cost upward from £150 for a return.
If you want to book two single journeys, which you might be interested in if you are doing a road trip and are not entirely sure of your return date then it can cost over £198 in total, £99 each way. During peak times it can be more even up to £160 for a single way journey.
Tell me the secret! How do I save money on eurotunnel?
The secret is booking a sameday return for your outbound journey, which will cost £49. And then DON’T USE the return ticket.
When you need to return, find an internet cafe in France and book the reverse direction, again a sameday return : cost £44 and DON’T USE the return ticket.
There you’ve made a return journey on Eurotunnel for just £99, with your car. And you’ve saved at least £50!
What’s the catch? We know of many frequent travellers who use this to save themselves money but it is stated on the Eurotunnel ticket that unused return ticket will be charged at the correct price. WE KNOW OF NO ONE THAT HAS HAD EUROTUNNEL CHARGE THEM FOR AN UNUSED DAY RETURN TICKET. Use at your discretion and chance.
Let us know your experiences and leave us a comment.
