Customize Gallery2 search module – how to change the results from the standard 1-3

Gallery2 whilst being an amazing gallery system to display and catalogue photos or pictures it does have some inflexibilities that make you weep.
Problem – The search box only brings up the first 3 results
What do you do? Most galleries will have more than 3 results. In the standard installation you have to click another button to get the full results and people have mentioned to me that it’s a bit of a bore. So I’ve written this easy to use guide to change this and sort out a decent first search. Let’s go on …. it’s not complicated but needs a few minutes of time.

Before we get started let’s look at how it works in practice. Go to Pure Anime Gallery and search using ‘avatar’

So, Let’s get going!
- 1. We need to start by looking inside the Gallery2 core and we’ll need to go into FTP for that. Launch your FTP client and navigate to: /modules/search/
- 2. Find SearchScan.inc . This controls the number of returned searches, so our first step is to modify this file. ** Be sure to take a copy somewhere safe on your PC before modifying anything**
- 3. Find line number 113 which reads:
/* TODO: Parameterize this */ $scanSize = 3; - 4. This value controls the maximum number of results. In this example we will create 12 so we change the following:
$scanSize = 12;
- 5. Our screenshot now looks like this :
As you can see we have got 12 searches BUT gallery2 has strung them into one big line, and it goes totally off the screen in one big table. - 6. NEXT we tell Gallery2 to insert table breaks to create a nice structure. For this example we will set it to 4 items per line.
- 7. We have to change directory into: /modules/search/templates/
- 8. Find this file: SearchScan.tpl – back it up!
- 9. Open this file and find line 95 which reads:
- 10. This is the start of the loop which controls the output so we have to add a line or two in here to control the output:
I’ve attached a Text file so that you can copy and paste … click to down the Gallery2 search chunk - 11. So in total you have to add a few lines in there - no problem hey?
- 12. Job done. Here’s a final screen shot:

When you have domain names and not using them, or not using them at the moment you need to make them work for you! You need to make them earn you CASH! Here I will review a new web package called “Steady Niche” which can run and update itself AND run Google Adsense to generate INCOME!
We have some domain names that we bought for purposes that seemed great at the time but for various reasons we couldn’t build site and maintain these sites. We’d been looking at picking them up again but work pressures beckoned and we couldn’t release time to do anything solid with them.
This is when we found SteadyNiche.
SteadyNiche is basically a mini-website which you can run on your domain.
How does it work?
You upload SteadyNiche to your webspace and follow the setup guide. It’s a breeze! You just fill out a small form which looks something like:
From there you type in a few things about how you want to focus your website. THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THE KEYWORD.
SteadyNiche is very clever. It takes your keyword and goes off onto the internet and drags in all the information it can find and puts them onto your site in the format of a website. It’s like an information aggregator. The beauty of this is that when the internet updates it also updates. Your SteadyNiche site is automatically updated with NEW CONTENT!
How do I make money from SteadyNiche?
From Adsense! In SteadyNiche setup you type in your Adsense publisher ID and it puts Adsense on the page AUTOMATICALLY.
This alone, makes one of my sites $2 a day!
You can also make money using Commission Junction, again you give it your publisher ID and it drags in products.
It really is that easy!

Is there a catch?
Not really, except to say that it runs IonCube, which is a way for them to protect their code via encryption. To run SteadyNiche it needs IonCube on the server. Some hosts have it installed by default if yours hasn’t then you have to upload IonCube too. The ioncube runtime module needed is available from the SteadyNiche download area, so there’s no drama just an extra couple of minutes.
Where can I find SteadyNiche?
You can buy direct from them -> SteadyNiche. Last time I looked it was $49.90 to run on 5 domains. $149.90 for an unlimited amount of domains.

What’s it like running a FREE web directory?

What are web directories?
Imagine a yellow pages but every site that’s listed has got a hyper link.
They are at their peak, and there must be more than 10,000 of them at the moment. The current blooming of directories was instigated by the availability of cheap but well-built scripts to run them. They are an interesting tool as many SEO people will mention : BACKLINKS ARE GREAT for SEO. By giving you a backlink from the directory they should help your site a little to budge it up the rankings.
Many people start them because they can have a payment structure built-in which gives the site a few dollars for reviewing your site and making sure it’s in the correct category and contributes towards the hosting costs.
On the other hand there are many directories that run for free - yup NO PAYMENT. GREAT! Where are the free ones? Vilesilencer has the best list and you can find it here Free Web Directories
WOW - this is good - how can I setup one?
Well, first I recommend reading this article by someone who already has gone through everything with his directory. A fine read and is worth casting your glance over to see what’s involved … running a web directory. Here’s snippet :
Stage 1 - You dream of ownership and possible fame from owning the next BIG directory. The desire to help your fellow forum members and maybe earn some cash along the way is the driving force behind your decision to build a directory.
Stage 9 - Deciding that a paid directory would solve most of your problems, with a little embarassement you announce your directory is going paid but you will keep the prices low $1 a submission to keep out the shady submitters, auto submitters and spam. Maybe this higher class of submitters will even be literate enough to read the terms and conditions thereby making approvals a lot quicker. Now you can start to make some money too.

StumbleUpon traffic is pants and here’s why

There’s an interesting thread over at PRO SEO Forums about the effects of StumbleUpon and what the author calls a Stumble SWARM. The swarm congregates on a site suddenly, pounds the site for a day, and then clears off. Within 24 hours the site was swamped with traffic and then it breaks off and nothing is seen again for days after.
Here at Words and Pictures blog we are sure that Stumblers bring some great traffic and visibility to websites but the author doesn’t rate it at all - the author writes:
Checking the referrer showed it was ALL from stumbleupon.com so the URL had been shared on Stumbleupon and within about 8 hours the site had got 844 unique vists.

Personally I think it’s pants, at least on this occasion.
